Storybuilding Essentials Course

The Storybuilding Essentials Course takes a deep dive into the five essential building blocks of the romance: character, plot, conflict, worldbuilding, and stakes. We explain how these elements break down when, for example, the conflict isn't tied to the character's goal closely enough, or when only one character has authentic stakes. This practical course includes before/after examples, analysis so you understand why an example works/doesn't, and shows you how to revise from good-to-better and better-to-best to help you write an unbreakable book. Whether you've started writing a romance and need guidance on effective revision, or you want to start your novel off strong, this course will show you how to build an unbreakable book.

We recommend the Romance 101 Mini-Course or the Five Essential Building Blocks as a prerequisite to this course, but this course can be taken on its own.

Storybuilding Essentials covers the three ways most "broken" books fail. We explain what a fracture looks like on the page and show you how to prevent your book from breaking through video lectures and written examples. This course provides a robust downloadable Storybuilding Worksheet that includes the questions you'll need to answer to build an "unbreakable book" that can be used with each and every book you write, or at any point in the process of revising an existing novel.

Our students love us

The introductory course answered all the questions I've had (and many I didn't even know I had) about writing romance. I have a lot of experience as a writer, but writing romance is totally new to me, and I really felt like I needed a roadmap of sorts to help me get started. This course was that roadmap. ...For the first time, I really feel like I'm writing something that has a sense of direction. I'm really glad I signed up!

Jeanne De Vita

Jeanne De Vita, creator and founder of Romance Writing Academy, is a professional developmental editor, writing instructor, and widely-published romance author.

While editing New York Times and USA Today bestselling romance authors, top-earning indie romance authors, and aspiring romance authors, Jeanne discovered that writers of all skill levels were looking for easy-to-understand instruction on the essentials of writing a romance novel that would immediately impact the words on the page.

Drawing from her years of experience editing tens of millions of words, Jeanne teaches everything from the technical aspects of writing—such as the structure of the romance novel, where/when the first kiss should happen, and how to pace subplot and balance internal and external conflict—to the really fun stuff, like how to write intimacy and chemistry that keeps readers engaged and characters satisfied.

Jeanne lives in Los Angeles and teaches at UCLA Extension, the Ripped Bodice Bookstore, and extensively for writing groups and individuals. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Notre Dame and enthusiastically believes that with support, structure, and guidance, anyone can learn to write their heart out!
